Ratcatcher: Tobacco Typography & Narrative Design
A promotional poster and booklet for Ratcatcher (1999), the directorial debut of Lynne Ramsay, set during the 1970s garbage workers’ strike in Glasgow. The film follows children searching for moments of comfort within a fractured social landscape.Inspired by the father’s heavy reliance on cigarettes and alcohol, I used tobacco from cigarettes to physically construct the title “Ratcatcher,” scanning the material to preserve its raw texture. A color-coded navigation system in the booklet introduces visual rhythm and a subtle sense of hope within the film’s bleak narrative.
