“ What Is Our Role? ”: A Visual Manifesto Inspired by David Chipperfield
While reading David Chipperfield’s essay “What is our role?”, I began to reflect on the relationship between architecture and graphic design. I realized that both disciplines share similar qualities—they are often geometric, rigorous, and built upon structured grid systems, yet at the same time, they have room for poetry and emotional expression.
Chipperfield mentions how he draws inspiration from landscape painting, and that inspired me to explore how I, as a designer, can push the boundaries of visual language. I used simple geometric blocks as a foundation, then broke apart the system to find a balance between order and freedom. Through this approach, I sought to create a visual experience that feels both restrained and expressive—an invitation for the audience to feel, interpret, and wander.
